Hyden Hill Butterfly Transect – 2023 Results

The weekly monitoring of butterflies for the UK Butterfly Monitoring Scheme on the Hyden Hill transect has just been completed for 2023. The numbers of butterflies were up nearly 300 on last years results.

Freshly Hatched Red Admiral

It has been a difficult last half of the summer this year for butterflies. Most of the nectar plants have been dried out by the very high temperatures and lack of rain. Pamela Peacock managed to catch this freshly hatched red admiral recently, on what looks like ivy.

Silver-washed Fritillary Spotted in Hen Wood

The first silver-washed fritillary I have seen this year was spotted flying along one of the wide rides in Hen Wood today. It is one of the larger butterfly species in the UK. It needs fairly open woodland to thrive.
